Abstract
The purpose of the present study aimed to introduce the discharge assessment tool of long-stay psychiatric inpatients which was developed in Hwaseong Mental Health Welfare Center and to develop its cut-off values using quantitative data and qualitative data collected by an action research team in the center. The action research team consisted of four members: three workers from the center and a researcher. In 2011, the discharge assessment tool of long-stay psychiatric inpatients was developed through various activities including interviewing 81 inpatients in seven mental hospitals in Gyungi province, bi-weekly case conference meetings in the center, and 5 consulting meetings. Up to 2016, 90 psychiatric inpatients had been evaluated using the discharge assessment tool and their data were analyzed in the present study. The major study findings are as follows. First, the Discharge Assessment Tool of long-stay psychiatric inpatients is a multi-dimensional instrument consisting of the 10 domains (symptom, risk, discharge need, rehabilitation basic ability, family cooperation, age, illness, medication management, hospitalization length, job history) . Second, quantitative and qualitative data analyses reveal that 6 or 8 points would be the most discriminating thresholds. The implications of these study findings are discussed.
